Manchester United forwards coach Benni McCarthy believes Bafana Bafana striker Lyle Foster could fit in at the FA Cup winners.
Foster, 23, is headed to play in the Championship again following Burnley’s relegation from the Premier League.
Foster struggled with mental health issues and scored only five goals in 24 Premier League appearances this season, but he has nevertheless convinced McCarthy that he is good enough for United.
The Bafana legend refused to examine the attacker’s statistics, who also provided just three assists in the league.
“When we drew against Burnley, I was rubbing my eyes out because I thought Lyle was that good, he could fit like a glove in our team, in that Manchester United team,” McCarthy said on Marawa Sports Worldwide.
“His movement was unbelievable; [Harry] Maguire couldn’t deal with Lyle because of his movement.”
Foster faced Manchester United twice in the just-ended Premier League season. Burnley first lost 2-0 at home before forcing a 1-1 draw in the Turf Moor fixture.
It was also a season when Foster angered a section of Bafana fans after he snubbed national team, saying he was dealing with his mental health issues, but still played club football.
McCarthy leapt to the defence of the striker.
“It’s sad for South Africans to be celebrating because Burnley went down, because of the punishment for Lyle Foster,” McCarthy added.
“Mental health is slowly becoming the fastest killer out there.”
The former Orlando Pirates player still has four years on his Burnley contract, and it is to be seen whether he’ll return to the Championship next season.
