Former Nigerian Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan, who is leading the observer mission of the Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa (EISA), told Scrolla.Africa he is satisfied with the way South Africa has conducted the elections.

Jonathan visited several voting stations in the township. Scrolla.Africa caught up with him at Alexandra High School.

“It is early to make a final call but there have been no reports of serious incidents of irregularities across the country,” he said.

“This shows the maturity of South African democracy since the end of the apartheid government.”

However he raised concerns that some voting stations in Alexandra still had long queues at about 6pm. People might still be here until midnight tonight.

Some might even leave without voting, which is worrying.

Speaking about some glitches – like voters who were turned away because they had registered somewhere else – Jonathan said they raised a similar issue in one of the meetings before the election.

“There was not enough awareness from voters regarding this. We have received reports which indicate that some voters were turned away.”

Jonathan commended the IEC for sterling work in these elections.
