DA party leader John Steenhuisen threw his final punches at the ANC government, hoping to attract more voters to his party for the national elections on 29 May.
Addressing thousands of party members mostly from Gauteng, the party leader said the sudden signing of the National Health Insurance (NHI) Bill will not solve the ANC corruption and mismanagement that has destroyed public healthcare.
“It will instead expropriate medical aid from millions of South Africans who despite the misrule of the ANC have worked hard to make it into the middle class since 1994.”
The party has been at the forefront of fighting against the implementation of the NHI bill which President Cyril Ramaphosa into law two weeks ago, even threatening to take the ANC government to court.
Steenhuisen said the DA has a rational and sustainable plan to achieve universal access to quality healthcare by making private medical aid affordable for more people while rooting out corruption and mismanagement from public hospitals and clinics.
He highlighted that the DA’s track record of effective governance is evident in the Western Cape, where they govern.
“The disasters in this country are not inevitable. They were created by corrupt selfish people who used the corruption of BEE and cadre deployment to become billionaires,” he said.
“This is while plunging 11-million people into unemployment and 30-million into poverty.”
Echoing his words the party’s chief whip in Parliament, Siviwe Gwarube, said the ANC government has overstayed its welcome after over 30 years in power.
“They think government funds belong to them and enjoy them with their close friends. It’s time to send thieves to prison,” she said.
“Our people are dying of hunger. People want jobs that will give them dignity. It is a crime that in 2024 children are dying of hunger or drowning in pit toilets at their schools.”
