The young blood in the Proteas’ squad will have to get up to speed quickly as they prepare for the upcoming 2021 and 2022 ICC Men’s Twenty20 World Cup, as well as the ICC Men’s World Cup in 2023.
Cricket South Africa’s (CSA) Convenor of Selectors, Victor Mpitsang, believes the rookies have a big void to fill in the absence of veterans, while they also have an opportunity to make a name for themselves.
“It will be a good indication of our depth as a cricket nation with the loss of some of the senior players to the Indian Premier League,” he said.
“As the selection panel, we are looking forward to seeing what the new additions to the team will bring to the Proteas’ system.”
Warriors all-rounder Wihan Lubbe and Momentum Multiply Titans fast bowler Lizaad Williams have received their maiden call-ups to the squad.
South Africa are gearing for the Pakistan tour, which will commence on 2 April, through to 16 April.
The tour will consist of three ODI’s and four T20 international matches.
“We have enough experience within that squad to present Pakistan with a good challenge when they arrive on our shores,” said Mpitsang.
“And to Temba Bavuma, our new captain, all the best to him and the players for the upcoming tour.”
The team will assemble in Pretoria on Saturday.
