The DA in KwaZulu-Natal has mocked the daughter of former president Jacob Zuma for being unable to speak isiZulu.
This comes after Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla’s address at a Durban Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) party meeting, ahead of the party’s successful People’s Mandate manifesto launch at Orlando Stadium in Soweto on Saturday.
At the event, Zuma was expected to address the members of the party but his daughter arrived at the last minute to represent him.
She was then provided with a Zulu translator in order to address the mostly Zulu-speaking crowd.
Her English speech with the assistance of Zulu translator Siyabonga Ngubo caused a stir on social media as many people were shocked that she does not speak isiZulu.
“Sanibonani. Firstly, I want to apologise that President Jacob Zuma couldn’t be here today,” she said in a three-minute long speech.
She said he had urgent business elsewhere.
“As we speak he is on the air. Since 16 December it’s been a war and everyone is trying to attack him,” she said.
DA KZN Chairperson Dean Macpherson said that their premier candidate Chris Pappas does not need a translator when he addresses people in IsiZulu.
MK party critics took social media by storm to criticise Zuma-Sambudla for failing to speak her mother tongue.
The biggest critic of Zuma and the MK Party, Tik Toker, Goolam alleged that Zuma-Sambudla mixes isiZulu and English but her Zulu is very bad.
Others jumped to her defence and stated that people should understand that she grew up in Mozambique where she and her twin brother, Duduzane were born.
People were complaining that she can’t speak isiZulu when her father addressed most gatherings in the proper Zulu language.
Zuma-Sambudla defended her use of the English language claiming that apartheid disadvantaged her.
