There is a saying in football that goes, “You are only as good as your last game”.
Kaizer Chiefs coach Gavin Hunt is a big believer in this, and wants his players to believe it too, ahead of the Soweto Derby on Sunday at FNB Stadium at 3pm.
Orlando Pirates have had the better of Amakhosi in their previous three meetings this season, with Bucs winning all three, with the latest coming on 30 January in the DStv Premiership.
But Hunt doesn’t see anything superior about Bucs.
“In football past games mean nothing when it comes to the future matches. Their wins over us in the past means nothing in this coming game and it won’t come into play on Sunday. To be honest they don’t have any psychological advantage over us,” said Hunt.
Pirates are currently in third place while Chiefs are in 11th with 15 points between them. Hunt acknowledged that Pirates have done well so far this season.
“If you look at the log table you can say there is a big gap between us and them. That is how you should judge us, not by past games. You can win five games in a row but that means nothing in the coming one.
“But I must admit, Pirates have invested a lot in their squad this season. They have done well and they are a strong side. It’s going to be a tough, tough game for us,” said Hunt.
His counterpart at Pirates, Josef Zinnbauer, has pointed out that Amakhosi are starting to look better in their matches.
“Yes, they have struggled a bit in the past but you can see signs of improvement. They are a good side with a quality coach who has lots of experience in this league. We should tread carefully on Sunday. They looked good in their past matches in the league and in the Champions League,” said Zinnbauer.
The German added that his players should continue with their game plan that saw them getting a late win against Nigerian giants Enyimba in the CAF Confederation Cup on Wednesday.
