Mamelodi Sundowns’ bid to smash more PSL records is under siege as they face a desperate Royal AM side at 5.30pm on Saturday.
The teams meet at Lucas Moripe Stadium. The Brazilians are playing for prestige, while their opponents are trying to avoid relegation.
Sundowns are nine points away from getting a record 72 points in the PSL era, with five games left to achieve that.
They have already won the league title and are just fulfilling the remaining league fixtures to break records – including finishing the season as invincible, without ever tasting defeat.
Coach Rhulani Mokwena insists they are not taking the Royal AM match lightly.
“Of course, we have to be professionals,” Mokwena told the media.
“We have to finish the league the way we started it, with the same vigour and intensity. And we have to take our chances. These are the types of games where you have to take your chances, especially in the first half.”
Royal AM are 14th on the table and not entirely safe from relegation.
Thwihli Thwahla have not been able to sign players this season due to a Fifa player transfer ban, and coach John Maduka said they are now feeling the pinch of the sanctions.
“It’s really hard, especially because of the ban,” said Maduka.
“We are starting to feel it now. The players we have now are not seasoned players. But that’s how it is. There is nothing we can do. At training, sometimes, we look okay but when we come to the game, it’s a different story. It becomes a problem,” he said.
“So, what can we do? We continue working to make sure that we save the team so that the team is safe.”
Royal AM face Sundowns at a crucial stage of the season – they are battling for survival, having lost their last three PSL matches.
