Komphela pulls a bikini after Downs draw

Golden Arrows coach Steve Komphela has made unorthodox remarks in defending his team’s 0-0 draw with Mamelodi Sundowns on Wednesday.

Abafana Bes’thende were held by 10-man Masandawana in a Premier Soccer League match and remained outside the top eight.

The Brazilians had defender Mosa Lebusa sent off at the start of the second half, and the hosts could not exploit their visitors’ numerical disadvantage.

After the match, Komphela defended his men, insisting they were the better side of the evening.

But his choice of analogy was a Komphela classic.

“Statistics are like a bikini, they don’t reveal everything,” Komphela argued, insisting that his side had the better players.

After gaming a point, Arrows remained tenth in the standings. They were facing a Sundowns team that had already won the PSL title and was playing to break records and gain prestige.

Komphela went on to make a case for his forward, Lungelo Nguse, who he feels deserves to be in the Bafana Bafana fold.

“I am tempted to say yes [Nguse is ready for Bafana Bafana]. I said the same about Tshegofatso Mabasa, I said the same about a whole lot of other players, but it came up around as misunderstood,” he said.

“I think, looking at this Nguse kid, he is something else. He gave big boys trouble here, and you see, Lebusa must have felt him. [Mothobi] Mvala must have said, ‘Okay who is this one? Number 40 Nguse’.

“So, based on that, I would agree with the question, he’s got ability. He is 26 [25 to be exact], you know in South Africa, we say you’re still young, but he should be playing.”

Arrows now prepare to face Chippa United in their next match and still have a chance to finish the season in the top eight.
