Following their record seventh consecutive PSL title win, Mamelodi Sundowns are now eyeing breaking records.
The Brazilians thumped Kaizer Chiefs 5-1 at FNB Stadium on Thursday to confirm their status as the 2023-24 PSL champions.
With six league games to go before they conclude their campaign, Sundowns are not taking those matches as dead rubbers.
They earned 71 points during the 2015-16 term, a PSL record for the highest points tally in a season.
Currently on 62 points, Masandawana can end the season on 80 points should they win their remaining six league matches.
Even if they drop points along the way, they can still collect an attainable nine points they need to equal their record.
“With 71 points, why not go for it? It’s there, if you get it, you get kudos. If you don’t get it you try again next time,” coach Rhulani Mokwena told the media.
“Why not go for the next target? Every mountain is there to be climbed and the moment you climb one mountain you look for another one. So, why not go for 71 points or more? Last season we got to 70 so it’s possible. Why not?”
Sundowns have been unstoppable on the domestic scene and Cape Town Spurs midfielder Michael Morton feels they are far from having their dominance broken.
“It’s hard to see any other club competing against Sundowns,” Morton said on social media. “It can be tough. I see Sundowns’ dominance continuing for a very long time.”
Winning the PSL with games in hand might have acted as a saving grace for Sundowns who were knocked out of the CAF Champions League by Esperance last week.
After the convincing victory over Chiefs, Sundowns now focus on Sunday’s Nedbank Cup semi-final clash with high-flying Stellenbosch.
