The man who grabbed a police officer’s service pistol and shot him dead while the officer and his partner were investigating a domestic violence incident has been killed by cops.

On Wednesday, Sergeant Adrian Mahoney, 44, and his partner were sent to attend a domestic violence complaint on Klapmuts Street, Mamre, about 50km north of Cape Town.

The suspect allegedly grabbed the officer’s gun during a scuffle inside the house and fatally shot him.

He also fired at the sergeant’s partner but missed before fleeing on foot.

Police launched a manhunt for the suspect and on Thursday morning managed to trace him to a farm in Mamre.

The suspect was shot dead after allegedly pointing Mahoney’s service pistol at the officers and refusing to surrender.

Vathiswa Mthantana from Nyanga doesn’t feel sorry for the cop killer.

“SAPS members are doing a good job. We must stop feeling sorry for people who kill officers. They know very well they will get arrested, stay a few years in jail, come back, and continue living their lives,” she said.

Esona Moko from Gugulethu township said Mahoney’s family will get some closure now that his killer is dead.

“I know the officer won’t come back, but I’m sure they’ll get some relief. Imagine if that man was still roaming the street. We know he was going to get bail and continue killing innocent people.”

Western Cape police provincial commissioner Lieutenant-General Thembisile Patekile said it was disheartening that a police officer was shot with his own pistol.

“Police are there to protect community members, they should not come under attack,” he said.

Phaladi Supping, the spokesperson for the Independent Police Investigative Directorate, said they are investigating the suspect’s death.
