Richarlison opened up about his struggle with depression following Brazil’s unexpected exit from the 2022 World Cup during the quarter-finals against Croatia.

The Tottenham Hotspur forward said the defeat damaged his mental health and pushed him to almost quitting football.

In an emotional interview with ESPN Brasil, Richarlison, aged 26, said despite achieving his dream of playing in a World Cup and being in the prime of his career, the result of the tournament left him questioning everything.

“I was reaching my limit. I don’t know. I’m not going to talk about killing myself but I was in a state of depression there, and I wanted to give up,” he admitted.

“I think the therapist, like it or not, saved me; saved my life. I only thought rubbish.”

Richarlison started feeling better after he got professional help, saying therapy saved his life, and recommended others facing similar struggles to get help.

“If you need a psychologist, look for one. It’s nice to open up like that, to be talking to a person,” he said.

Following his interview, both Tottenham Hotspur and his former club Everton have publicly offered their support to Richarlison.
