Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Manqoba Mnqithi has helped the side to a club record of 22-games unbeaten run in all competitions.
However, it is not the only DStv Premiership side which has achieved this impressive accomplishment under Mnqithi’s leadership.
The 49-year-old is now using his experience as a head coach which he gained in previous spells in charge of Lamontville Golden Arrows and Amazulu.
Remarkably, Mnqithi led both Durban sides to their own respective club records of unbeaten runs in the Premier Soccer League too.
Arrows were unbeaten in 12 matches between April and September 2009 – seven wins and five draws – for what remains their longest run without a defeat in the PSL.
Abafana’Besthende eventually won their first ever title when they lifted the 2009 MTN 8 trophy under Mnqithi.
Current Arrows coach Mandla Ncikazi took them within one game of matching that record this campaign, but their 11-match unbeaten run was ended by a 4-2 loss at Cape Town City.
Mnqithi then guided Amazulu to their longest unbeaten run in the PSL after 11 games from January to March 2011.
He registered three wins and eight draws.
Mnqithi, along with co-coaches of Rhulani Mokwena and Steve Komphela, has Sundowns on course for a treble this season. They continue to ease towards the quarterfinals of the CAF Champions League, they are also sitting pretty at the top of the Premiership and are still in the running for the Nedbank Cup.
To have now taken Sundowns on their longest stretch without defeat in all competitions cements his credentials as one of the leading coaches in his generations in the PSL.
