Max Verstappen’s father, Jos, has reportedly told his friends that his son will leave Red Bull if Christian Horner remains in his role as team chief.
Horner was under investigation this past month after accusations of “coercive behaviour” by a female colleague.
He was cleared of the allegations on Wednesday.
Following the decision, messages between Horner and his accuser were leaked via an anonymous email. According to The Telegraph, this led star driver Verstappen’s father into telling friends that his son would leave if need be.
Following the weekend’s Bahrain Grand Prix, Jos Verstappen told Mail Sport that he believes Horner should not continue occupying his position at Red Bull.
“There is tension here while he (Horner) remains in position. The team is in danger of being torn apart. It can’t go on the way it is. It will explode. He is playing the victim, when he is the one causing the problems,” he said.
Three-time world champion Max has already had his future questioned, with Mercedes closely linked to signing him. The instability at Red Bull is only likely to further add fuel to the rumours.
The second race of the campaign takes place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Saturday 9 March.
