South African influencer and YouTuber Kay Yarms drew her followers into registering to vote for the upcoming elections on 29 May.
Using her Instagram story, she posted what seemed to be a link to new video content, but it cleverly took users to the voter registration site.
With the registration deadline at midnight last Friday, the Electoral Commission of South Africa reported a significant number of young people hadn’t yet registered.
Followers praised her creative approach, with one saying, “You really tricked us here but thank you now I’m fully registered thanks to you,” and another acknowledged, “I literally forced my friend to register using your link.”
Yarms also shared another story filled with messages from her followers telling her they had registered thanks to her story.
Kay Yarms is a major influence on South Africa’s Gen Z with around 300,000 YouTube subscribers as shown by her impact on consumer behaviour — like the surge in sales for Dawn’s Repairing Lotion following her endorsement, and the 24-hour sell-out of her beauty range collaboration with Mr Price, Kay Yarms X Scarlet Hill.
President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the date for this year’s elections, Wednesday, 29 May.
