Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos believes that if his side can do what it takes to beat Morocco on Tuesday, it will open their path to the Africa Cup of Nations final.
South Africa’s match against the Atlas Lions may only be a last-16 bout, but given the form of their opponents, a win would certainly give Broos’s belief a huge boost.
Morocco became the continent’s first team to ever reach a Fifa World Cup semi-final in Qatar last year, and there is no doubt they are one of the favourites to win Afcon.
Broos has seen his side beat them before and Bafana’s positive record against the North African side is certainly something the boss can shout about.
In eight meetings between the teams, South Africa has won three, drawn three and lost just two. The most recent of those wins came in Johannesburg earlier this year.
“Morocco is on another level. They showed it at the last World Cup in Qatar. They have become a very good team with very good players,” Broos told reporters ahead of Tuesday’s game.
“But we have played them twice — in Morocco, we were a bit dominated but in Johannesburg, we won against them. That must give us confidence for Tuesday’s game, and believing that even against such a good team as Morocco there are things that are possible.
“We have to believe in that, and then we will see. If we beat Morocco then we know we have a big chance to play in the final.”
The teams will face off at the Stade Laurent Pokou in San Pedro on Tuesday at 10 pm.
