Manchester United eliminated from Europe

It was another trembling display from Erik Ten Hag’s side as they left the Old Trafford pitch to a hostile response from the home crowd.

Knowing they needed a win and the luck of results elsewhere to go their way, United missed out on both — hence missing out on even a Europa League knockout place.

With Harry Kane and Bayern Munich in town, the visitors took the game to United, and all it took was one moment to kill them off.

A good first half defensive display was followed by more injury woes for the Red Devils, with Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw both going off.

In the second period, the hosts kept more of the ball but failed creatively before Kane and Kingsley Coman combined for the silencing winner.

Just four points in their six games saw United breaking some unwanted records. With Ten Hag’s men conceding 15 goals in the tournament this season, the most ever by a Premier League side in a single group stage in the competition.

Under Sir Alex Ferguson, United went out of the Champions League at this stage just three times in 18 seasons. After his retirement, they have now already suffered their third group stage departure in just seven seasons of playing in the competition.

Things could get even worse for Ten Hag as he looks to alter the destiny of the season with a mammoth trip to Anfield to face Liverpool on the league on Sunday.

For Bayern it is now 40 consecutive games without a defeat in the group stages of the competition, a run that extends back to 2017.

In Tuesday’s other Champions League results, Napoli defeated Braga 2-1 to progress to the last 16 while Real Madrid beat Union Berlin 3-2 away from home.

PSV and Arsenal drew 1-1, Lens defeated Sevilla 2-1 to leave them bottom of the group and Benfica won 3-1 away to Salzburg.

On Wednesday Newcastle United will see their fate decided when they take on AC Milan at St James’s Park while Dortmund host PSG and defending champions Manchester City face Red Star Belgrade away from home.
