Former US president Donald Trump plans to keep running for presidency despite the indictment on Thursday.
The sealed indictment is believed to contain details relating to Trump’s handling of classified documents case following his exit from the White House.
Trump’s attorney, Jim Trusty, says he has been indicted on seven charges linked to the handling of classified files that were allegedly found at his Mar-a-Lago mansion in August 2022. Trump’s exit from the White House at the end of his term in 2021.
National Archives and Records Administration officials reached out to Trump after realising that important files belonging to the state had been missing following his departure. Boxes of classified files were later retrieved from his private home. Trump has been under investigation for violating the Espionage Act and for obstruction of justice.
Trusty told CNN that charges include the violation of the Espionage Act, a count of conspiracy, making false statements and obstruction of justice.
He maintains that he is innocent. “I am an innocent man,” said Trump in a statement on his Truth Social account.
“I never thought it possible that such a thing could happen to a former president of the United States,” adds Trump.
The former president who is campaigning for the 2024 US presidential elections also accused current US president Joe Biden of corruption.
“The corrupt Biden Administration has informed my attorneys that I have been Indicted, seemingly over the Boxes Hoax,” said Trump.
Trump indicated earlier this year that he would continue running for another term in office despite the criminal charges hanging over him.
