Southampton went down and Sunderland went one step closer towards going up after Leeds and Newcastle played out a cracking 2-2 draw on an exciting Saturday of English football.

With Manchester United winning on the goal rush while Southampton lost to Fulham, Tottenham Hotspur lost at Aston Villa and Chelsea managed just a draw at home to Nottingham Forest, it was the early kick off that had huge implications on the top and bottom of the Premier League table.

Luke Ayling put Sam Allardyce’s side in front early on before Patrick Bamford missed a huge opportunity from the penalty spot to send Leeds two goals to the good.

Callum Wilson would not make the same mistake when he was gifted two opportunities from 12 yards, putting both away to put the visitors into the lead.

Centre half Ramsus Kristensen levelled matters before Junior Firpo saw red in a thrilling end to proceedings.

The draw saw Leeds go within a point of Everton in their bid to avoid the drop, while Newcastle dropping two points now leaves them third, only four points clear of Liverpool in fifth and level with Manchester United in fourth.

The late kick off was a Championship playoff first leg encounter between Sunderland and Luton, with the Black Cats coming out 2-1 victors as they eye Premier League football next season. The second semi-final takes place on Sunday with Coventry hosting Middlesbrough.

In the Premier League, the title race will see its next chapter unfold as Manchester City travel to Everton while Arsenal host Brighton.
