A horror-collision between a tour bus and a cash-in-transit vehicle has left 20 people dead.

After the two vehicles crashed head-on on the N1 freeway near Makhado, Limpopo on Monday evening, the bus rolled off the N1 freeway into the river below.

The department of transport and community safety said a team of police officers are still searching for any passengers that may have been swept away by the river.

ER24 said in a statement that three people were found deceased by the roadside and 16 were found at the river.

“All were declared dead on arrival. One patient, of the 69 passengers confirmed transported to the hospital for various injuries, has since died,” they said.

ER24 revealed that most of the fatalities were due to passengers being trapped under the bus.

The cause of the incident remains unclear with heavy rains suspected to have contributed greatly to the tragedy.

The department of transport and community safety said: “Ten passengers are reported to have sustained serious injuries, 16 moderate, and 35 minor injuries. Passengers with injuries were transported to Makhado, Elim, and Siloam hospitals for medical attention.”

The N1 highway in Makhado has since been reopened to traffic.
