On a weekend where all eyes were at the top of the table, Harry Kane scored his 200th Premier League goal and became Tottenham Hotspur’s outright all-time leading goalscorer.
North London united to back Spurs in their pursuit to upset the champions just 17 days after they had lost a halftime lead in a 4-2 defeat at the Etihad.
But at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Pep Guardiola’s side had never won a game. In fact, they had never scored a goal; and City knew that needed to change if they were to capitalise on Arsenal’s defeat on Merseyside.
The visitors started well, keeping the ball and dictating the pace of the game. But at the 15 minute mark, the England captain was in the right place at the right time and as he has done 266 times before in club colours, found the back of the net.
Goal 267 in all competitions put him ahead of Jimmy Greaves as the club’s all-time leading goalscorer, breaking the record that stood for over 53 years. The very same strike was also his 200th in the league, entering a club that consists only of Alan Shearer (260) and Wayne Rooney (208).
Spurs knew they would have it all to do as the game progressed, learning from their experience in the away fixture where they allowed a two-goal lead to slip away.
Guardiola introduced Kevin de Bruyne on the hour mark, and the game produced a highly watchable end-to-end affair.
Later on, Cristian Romero was sent off, but still City could not score. Star man Erling Haaland failed to register even a single touch in the opposition penalty area; and the home fans understood that it was their striker’s night and no one else’s.
