The Proteas will play under the guidance of a temporary coach when England come to town at the end of January.
Rob Walter will get to decide who takes to the field as he prepares to assume duty of the position come February.
England will visit South Africa for three one-day internationals; with the first two taking place in Bloemfontein on 27 and 29 January before the final game kicks off in Kimberley on 1 February.
New white-ball coach Walter will only take the reins for the Kimberley encounter — but he will have a say on who makes the squad, says Cricket South Africa director of cricket Enoch Nkwe.
“There will be a special arrangement in place for the England ODI series, but that will be announced when the ODI squad is announced this week,” Nkwe said per News24.
“We’ll confirm everything this week, but Rob will be involved when it comes to selection and creating a bit of clarity. He’ll have an opportunity to meet the team next month in person and dig deeper into the details.”
Walter was once the strength and conditioning coach of the Proteas before making waves as Titans head coach. He then made his way to New Zealand to coach the Central Districts, from where he will return at the end of January when he will step into the Proteas job.
It will also be the first time ever that the Proteas will have separate coaches for the long and short formats of the game, with CSA announcing on Monday that Shukri Conrad will coach the red-ball side.
