Bottom-of-the-league Southampton knocked Pep Guardiola and Manchester City out of the Carabao Cup with a 2-0 win in Wednesday’s quarter final tie at St Mary’s.
The Saints faced up to a decent looking Citizens eleven that featured the likes of Joao Cancelo, Phil Foden and World Cup-winning Julian Alvarez from the start before Erling Haaland and Kevin de Bruyne came on in the second period.
It was a shock to all that despite these superstars, the visitors failed to register even a single attempt on target in the entire game, with Nathan Jones’ team looking better creatively all evening.
Despite completing 723 passes to Southampton’s 279 and keeping 78% of the ball, the Premier League champions looked far from threatening.
First half goals from Sekou Mara and Moussa Djenepo were enough for the hosts, who held on to book their place in the last four of the competition.
The Saints will face Newcastle United in the semi-final, after the Geordies beat Leicester 2-0 on Tuesday. In the other clash Manchester United will take on Nottingham Forest who got past Wolves following a penalty shootout in Wednesday’s other game.
