Manchester City destroyed Chelsea 4-0 at the Etihad in a third round FA Cup tie that will only accelerate the talk surrounding the future of Graham Potter’s role as Chelsea boss.
It was a horrific first 45 minutes for the visitors, who — despite a considerably strong eleven — were completely off it against a Pep Guardiola side missing Ederson, John Stones, Joao Cancelo, Kevin de Bruyne and Erling Haaland — to name a few.
Riyad Mahrez broke the deadlock, as he did in the league clash between the sides just three days prior. In that game, Chelsea looked like equal competition to a strong City side, putting in an excellent performance and were unlucky to lose 1-0. Here, Chelsea were pitiful.
Julian Alvarez made it two from the spot on the half hour mark before Phil Foden got one as well, becoming the only player to have scored in each of the last five FA Cup campaigns.
His goal sent the Cityzens into half time at 3-0 up.
Chelsea had just one attempt on target all game and it got even worse when Mahrez tucked away a penalty late on in the second half to end off a memorable win for City.
Pep Guardiola’s side awaits either Arsenal or Oxford United in the fourth round. Other ties to look out for are Tottenham Hotspur’s trip to Preston, Manchester United hosting Reading and Brighton facing either Liverpool or Wolves, who meet in a third round replay after their draw on Saturday.
