The community of Salvokop, in Tshwane, is reeling in shock after a speeding driver’s BMW sedan plunged into pedestrians late on Saturday afternoon, killing three children.

The driver fled the scene after running over nine pedestrians and crashing his car into a tree.

Speaking to Scrolla.Africa, Playmore Choto said the motorist might have been drunk. He said the way he was speeding, he was bound to crash.

“I’m lucky because he passed my stall. This is a residential area but I suspect he was driving over 100km/h. That car was just going to crash,” he said.

City of Tshwane Emergency Services Department spokesperson, Charles Mabaso, said three girls around the age of five were declared dead by paramedics on the scene.

“Emergency Services arrived on the scene to find multiple patients scattered around the scene with the sedan under a partially collapsed tree. The driver of the sedan could not be found at the scene of the accident,” Mabaso said in a statement.

He said two women, one of whom is nine months’ pregnant, were transported to Steve Biko Hospital with moderate to serious injuries.

“Four other patients were also transported to hospital with minor to moderate injuries. The scene was handed over to the SAPS for further handling and investigations.”
