Nigerian superstar Burna Boy turned up over six hours late for a concert in Lagos and proceeded to tell the crowd they should be grateful that he was there – and his fans are not happy about it.
The Love Damini Concert was scheduled to be held at 9pm on Sunday night. According to fans who were present at the event, the singer did not show up on stage until about 3:30 a.m.
“Some people have been around since 9pm. For an artist with the highest level of international exposure, this is beyond terrible and unprofessional,” a fan tweeted.
The singer’s entrance was greeted with cheers from fans who were ready to forget the hours of waiting and boos from fans who were angry.
But there was no apology.
The singer would go ahead to say his fans should be thankful he showed up. He even claimed it was out of goodwill as well as fellow artist Seyi Vibez that he chose to remain at the venue.
He recounted how he was accused of killing someone in the club in August 2022. And how Nigerians on social media claim that his mother danced for late singer, Fela Kuti – reasons he said were enough to shun the show.
“If not for Seyi Vibes, I would have just gone home. But I’m here with you, after you all said I killed someone at Cubana (a club), after you all said my money danced for Fela.
“But it’s because I love you all that I’m here. If you don’t love me back, it’s God that will punish you,” he said in Pidgin English.
After blowing hot, the singer performed his hit songs to the waiting fans who cheered him despite their earlier displeasure.
Despite the backlash on Twitter and Instagram which lasted for hours, the singer has not yet apologised.
