Family of cop’s victim say his suicide gave them closure

The family of one of the two girls who were allegedly killed by their cop boyfriend says his death has brought them closure.

23-year-old Constable Mlungisi Sikhakhane is believed to have committed suicide on Saturday at the Westville Prison by hanging himself in his prison cell.

He was facing two counts of murder after he allegedly killed his two girlfriends, 18-year-old Enhle Majozi and 23-year-old Sthembile Ngobese, in October this year.

The two young women were murdered on the same day.

Majozi’s aunt, Precious Ndwalane, told Scrolla.Africa on Tuesday that as much as they don’t celebrate the death of any human being, they feel that Sikhakhane’s passing has given them closure.

“It was more painful and depressing to always attend the court case and face the accused who was always arrogant,” said Ndwalane.

Ndwalane has said regardless of the length of the sentence he may have served, the family was constantly worried about the possibility of Sikhakhane serving his time, but eventually being released to continue with his life.

“We always have the view that whether he got a long sentence or not, it won’t bring our daughter back and one day he will be released and continue his life as usual.

“We feel that his death has brought more closure to us as a family since he was not willing to tell the truth on why he killed our daughter,” added Ndwalane.

Sikhakhane last attended his court case on 14 December at the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court, west of Durban, in KwaZulu-Natal.

Correctional Services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo promised to respond to questions from Scrolla.Africa regarding details surrounding Sikhakhane’s suicide. Nxumalo had not responded by Tuesday afternoon.
