Arsenal triumph in Dubai

The mid-season competition, the Dubai Super Cup, concluded with Liverpool’s 4-1 win over AC Milan. Arsenal sealed top spot and Olympique Lyon came second following their results earlier in the week.

For Jurgen Klopp’s men, top spot was already out of the question following their defeat to Lyon on Sunday. What was more important, though, was getting the squad up to full fitness, with the games coming thick and fast, starting with a Carabao Cup game against Manchester City on Thursday.

Seeing the forwards back and firing would have proved vital to the Reds as well, with Mohamed Salah on the scoresheet after a much-needed rest; and Darwin Nunez returning with a brace after a difficult World Cup with Uruguay.

For Mikel Arteta and Arsenal, the tournament win would have only added to the momentum the Gunners need as they look to kick on after a great start to the Premier League campaign.

Arsenal are top of the pile in the league and host West Ham United on Boxing Day after one last friendly match against Juventus on Saturday.

The penalty shootouts for bonus points following each match would also have provided some extra practice under pressure for both sides ahead of cup games, where it may matter even more.

For Lyon and Milan, the competition provided some good opportunities to test their players against top opposition, with the French side looking to climb the Ligue 1 table and the Italian giants chasing Napoli for the league title.
