The future of South African boxing is bright if recent achievements by several young amateur boxers are anything to go by.

That’s according to South African National Boxing Organisation (Sanabo) president Siyabulela Mkwalo, after Team South Africa picked up three gold, two silver and two bronze medals in boxing at the Region 5 Youth Games held in Lilongwe, Malawi at the weekend.

A total of 209 boxers represented South Africa at the games.

Siseko Teyise, Vuyo Mnguni and Sotwili Asemahle won gold while Tshepo Makebele and female boxer Mtho Okuhle won silver.

Bronze medalists are female boxers Zandile Mathebula and Maisy Seimane.

Overall, Team SA was placed in second position. The team was coached by Nathi Thusi, Luyanda Dibela and Noluvuyo Joxo.

Speaking to Scrolla.Africa during the ongoing Cadet and Junior National Championships in Umlazi in Durban, Mkwalo said they are excited about the achievements of young boxers.

“These championships are crucial for the development of our boxers. The likes of Commonwealth Games bronze medalist Phiwokuhle Mnguni started in this very tournament and progressed to the elite stage,” he said.

“These games are important as we gear up for major international tournaments like the Olympics in 2024.”
