They are meant to enforce the law but the Tshwane Metro Police are the ones breaking it.
Over the weekend alone, six officers were arrested and charged.
On Saturday, four Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) Safety officers were arrested by the police after a sting operation and charged with armed robbery, kidnapping and corruption.
Then two officers from the same department decided not to be outdone by their colleagues and solicited a bribe from a speeding motorist on Sunday evening on the N1 near Midrand.
Unbeknown to the cops a motorist had a dashboard camera and the event was caught on camera.
In the video an officer can be heard negotiating a R1,000 bribe and even telling the motorist the closest garage where he can find an ATM to withdraw money.
The two officers drove behind the motorist to the ATM where he withdrew money and paid them a bribe.
When the motorist told the two cops everything had been recorded the two apparently dropped the money in the motorist’s car and fled the scene.
Tshwane Metro Police spokesperson, Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said the department was aware of the video circulating on social media and the two members had been identified and arrested.
“They will appear in court on Monday and we have started with internal disciplinary processes and will update the public about the outcomes,” Mahamba said.
In a tweet, Tshwane Executive Mayor Randall Williams encouraged the motorist to lodge a complaint against the cops.
