Royal AM is becoming coach kryptonite

There seems to be a pattern brewing at Royal AM that the owner Shauwn Mkhize needs to take notice of.

The club has lost two coaches in less than five months, with both resigning from their posts as opposed to being sacked.

On Tuesday, Dan Malesela shocked many when he handed in his resignation with immediate effect. Malesela signed with Thwihli Thwahla in July, just a few weeks after he resigned from Marumo Gallants.

He signed with maMkhize’s club a month later, in June, as the replacement for John Maduka, who left his post.

The club is in their second season in the DStv Premiership and already coaches can’t seem to see their contracts through.

A source close to Malesela told Scrolla.Africa that his departure had been coming even though he just joined the Durban-based club.

“He had different ideas with his co-coach Khabo Zondo and their assistant Abram Nteo. He really didn’t go along with them. The management was not paying attention to it and he was left with no choice but to resign,” said the sources.

There have been reports claiming that Malesela was not happy with the set-up at the club.

The co-coaching setup was not what he signed up for and he was only made aware of it after he put pen to paper.

Before Malesela joined Thwihli Thwahla, the club had first appointed Zondo as their new head coach right after the departure of Maduka.

However, maMkhize wasn’t happy with her CEO Sinky Mnisi’s decision to appoint Zondo, who last coached 13 years ago.

MaMkhize then appointed Malesela as head coach and demoted Zondo to co-coaching.

That set-up did not suit both coaches and on Tuesday Malesela resorted to departing his position, leaving the club in a dilemma with important matches on the horizon.

Malesela is understood to be heading back to Gallants. The Limpopo side currently doesn’t have a coach after Romain Folz resigned last week.

The Frenchman left his post complaining about interference from the management, who told him which starting lineup to use. At the end of last season Malesela resigned from the club, complaining about the same problem – but he is on his way back.
