Kwaito group Alaska has lost another member after Crazy Thibos, real name Thabo Tsotetsi, passed away on Sunday.

The news has been met with shock across the industry, as at the time of his death Thibos was preparing a series of live solo performances in October as well as running his own hair salon.

The cause of his death has not been confirmed but he reportedly died on Sunday morning at Bheki Mlangeni Hospital in Jabulani, Soweto.

Oscar “Oskido” Mdlongwa, owner of the Kalawa Jazmee record label and the man who discovered Alaska, wrote a tribute to Thibos on Instagram. Alongside a photograph of the musician was the message “Rest in power my king”.

Thabo Tsotetsi was joined by Lucky Mlakana, Andrew Moloisane, Siphiwe Picat, and Les Ma-Ada to make up the original lineup of the Alaska quintet, who have risen to legendary status in the Kwaito scene over the past two decades.

There are now just three surviving members of the band, however, as MaAda, the group’s lead singer, died in November 2013.

But their music remains relevant in 2022 with their timeless hit songs including “Accuse” and “Woshi” still making the rounds on music platforms.

Messages of condolences to Thibos’s family and friends have flooded social media.

“The EFF sends its heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the kwaito star Thabo “Crazy Thibos” Tsotetsi. The talent he shared with SA will forever be cherished,” read the statement shared on party’s Twitter page.
