Manchester United dug to the very depths of their footballing prowess to put Liverpool away for the first time in four years.

The famous home win took just 16 minutes to get underway as Jadon Sancho slotted past Alisson in the Liverpool goal after Anthony Elanga played a one-two with Christian Eriksen.

Just after the break, Ten Hag’s decision to bench the high profile Cristiano Ronaldo paid off as Marcus Rashford made the most of his pace up front to make it two.

Anthony Martial assisted after coming on off the bench in what was a phenomenal counter attack as Jürgen Klopp’s men dominated possession but did little in creative departments.

The German had little options off the bench due to injury and when substitute Fabio Carvalho assisted Mohamed Salah, it was too little too late.

Trent Alexander Arnold put in a corner that was difficult to deal with as Carvalho drove on before the ball lobed up for the Egyptian to head into the back of David de Gea’s net with eight minutes of normal time to play.

United used all the tricks in the book to see out the final phases of play, with Ronaldo coming on for the last five minutes.

The Portuguese could have sealed it in stoppage time with a shot from outside the box going high; and Martial could have made it three as well but for Alisson’s interception.

It ended 2-1 to the hosts, with Ten Hag celebrating his side’s first win of the season after a woeful start, losing to both Brighton and Brentford.

For Liverpool, their shocking start continues with the Reds now falling below United in the table with just two points from their opening three games of the campaign.
