Extra Time: The South African Football Association (Safa) delivered on their promise to Banyana Banyana, now it is your turn Nathi Mthethwa, writes Menzi Magubane
Safa president Danny Jordaan promised to give the players bonuses if they come back with the Wafcon title.
Last week, Safa kept their word, and paid R400,000 to each Banyana Banyana player after their triumph at the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) in Morocco.
However, Safa wasn’t the only one to commit to giving the African champions bonuses. The Minister of Sports, Art and Culture Nathi Mthethwa – on behalf of the department – promised R5.8 million.
Mthethwa committed himself publicly when welcoming Banyana players with the Wafcon trophy at OR Tambo International airport.
Now that Safa has delivered, the focus is now on whether Mthethwa and his department will honour their promise.
Just to remind the public, this is not the first promise Mthethwa and his department have made.
Last November he did the same when Mamelodi Sundowns ladies team came home with the inaugural CAF Champions League title.
He promised the team R1 million but that money is yet to be received by the ladies.
I’m sure he’s not going to keep Banyana Banyana waiting this long, is he? Only time will tell, but he must know the nation is watching.
Perhaps he has already paid the girls, but presumably Safa would have let the public know.
So, we are waiting to see just like we are still waiting on what he promised Downs’ ladies almost nine months ago.
