Sifiso Zulu was worried about his daughter’s long commute, so he rented a room for her and roommate next to their school in the hope that it would be safer for them.
But he was tragically wrong. Amanda Nqobile Zulu and her roommate Minenhle Buthelezi, both 18, were hacked to death with an axe on Saturday night. Amanda’s body was discovered in her room on Sunday, while Minenhle was found dumped next to a stream on Tuesday.
They were both learners at Ginyane High School in Ngwangwane location in Creighton, KwaZulu-Natal.
Zulu could not contain his emotions as he explained how he received the news of his first born daughter’s death.
“I was called by her aunt and she told me that Ama had been killed,” he said.
“At first I didn’t think she could be serious but when she cried and hung up I dropped everything and rushed to the hospital.”
He said when he got to the hospital mortuary he saw a sight he could never have imagined.
“My daughter’s injuries were savage. I keep asking myself what kind of person could ever do this to a young girl who was never aggressive or a fighter. I wonder what would make a person inflict such pain on anyone,” said Zulu.
Zulu said it is at least a 40-minute walk from her daughter’s mother’s house to school and sometimes she and the other pupils would finish studying after 8pm which is why he rented a room.
He is wondering what he is going to do regarding his young daughter who is in the same school when she gets to matric.
Police spokeswoman Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala confirmed the murders and that a suspect had been arrested.
“The suspect appeared before the Hlanganani Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday. He was remanded in custody until 11 August for a formal bail application,” said Gwala.
