When Godiragetse Mogajane was still at the University of Johannesburg, he enjoyed the convenience of ordering food and having it delivered within minutes. But when he went home to Hammanskraal, Tshwane, it was a different story.
Most of the food delivery apps in Mzansi don’t go into townships because of the difficulty in finding addresses using Google Maps.
So Godiragetse, 25, came up with the idea of the Delivery Ka Speed app.
This would not only benefit himself and the people of Hammanskraal, but thousands of other people in many townships.
Delivery Ka Speed works with franchise food outlets in townships, as well as traditional local food merchants.
Customers order their food through WhatsApp. Payments can be made via EFT, online card payment, card-on-delivery with Yoco machines, or cash.
Almost a year later, Delivery Ka Speed has expanded to 10 more townships around Gauteng. Godiragetse wants it to expand throughout the country.
Speaking to Scrolla.Africa, Godiragetse said the other aim of the app was to get the youth working.
“I have always wanted to have an impact on the community I come from. Most of our young people are at home and unemployed yet they are supposed to be breadwinners,” he said.
“Jobs have been created and we have more than 40 guys on e-bikes, scooters and bicycles delivering food in townships. We have 13 people working full time at our head office in Hammanskraal. So our youth are working and that makes me happy,” he said.
With the high petrol costs, the company uses mostly bicycles and electric scooters. When fully charged the scooters can travel about 90km on a charge.
The company has been around for less than a year, but they have already been awarded Youth Top Young Brand by Pat on Brands, during their inaugural Top 16 Youth-Owned Brand Awards awards on 16 June.
Godiragetse is currently studying Bcom Economics at Wits after dropping out of UJ in 2016 to pursue business.
He is also the founder of Goodie Tutors, a tutoring agency which provides extra tutorial classes by offering one-on-one tutoring, university pre-exam workshops and exam-focused math workshops for high school students.
The Delivery ka Speed app can be downloaded on the App store and Google Play and orders can be done through the WhatsApp number 076 983 5383.
Orders can currently be made to Hammanskraal, Soshanguve, Mabopane , Winterveld, Katlehong,Vosloorus, Thokoza, Palm ridge , Sky city and Eden Park.
