Friends and family gathered together on Tuesday to say their last goodbyes to Sugar Ndiki, the beloved puppy of TV star Moshe Ndiki.
Ndiki held a glamorous funeral in Sandton which was decorated by the well-known high-end décor and events company, Nono Events.
In an interview with Scrolla.Africa on Wednesday, Ndiki said Sugar was “part of the family and just like any other family member”, and he had to make sure he held a lavish funeral for him.
He said those who attended on Tuesday were friends who knew and loved Sugar, who passed away last week. Ndiki refused to disclose how Sugar died as well as how much he spent on the funeral.
He told the publication that there were 40 mourners who arrived to pay tribute to Sugar’s life.
“Just like a funeral of a person, there was an after-tears where people enjoyed their drinks and everything was well,” he said.
He said that Sugar led a happy life. “Sugar [used to go] to Puppy Palace Day Care and Spar in
Sandton. He [would be] groomed and taken care of by professionals.”
Ndiki said his love for animals started when he was young. “Animals have lives just like humans.
“Animals need to be protected because they are defenceless. I treated my dog as I would treat a human being. There was nothing strange about me holding a funeral for my beloved dog,” he said.
Pictures and videos posted to social media show a lavish event with beautiful white chairs arranged immaculately for the mourners.
He called people online who have made fun of him for holding a doggy funeral “evil”.
“There is nowhere where it is written that people should not conduct a funeral for their loved dogs or any pet.
“All I know is that the Bible’s teachings promote love above all. And if I showed love for my dog, why should people judge me? Sometimes I don’t understand people’s logic.”
He said it was sad to see people on social media commenting hateful words.
“It’s like black people want to see the next person fall. You can’t speak death to the living,” he said.
