Voting stations are open for Ukhozi FM’s annual Song of the Year.

The mainly Zulu language radio station announced its top ten songs on Tuesday and dance music lovers sighed with relief when they did not see a single Maskandi song.

It was time for a change after the unchallenged reign of the music genre for three consecutive years.

But it seems they got excited too soon. Maskandi fans are preparing to ruin the highlight of their festive season by voting for the only Gospel song on the list.

Having proved their voting power in past years, Maskandi fans are threatening to favour a song by Gospel artist Jumbo titled “Wena Nkosi Uyazi” over big Amapiano hits like Asibe Happy by Kabza De Small, DJ Maphorisa featuring Ami Faku and Adiwele by Young Stunna featuring Maphorisa and Kabza.

‘‘Since there is no Maskandi, I will vote for Jumbo. All the other songs (on the top ten) are promoting bad behaviour,” said one twitter user.

While other songs on the list are hits in their respective genres, like “Ghanama” by Makhadzi featuring Prince Benza, “Osama” by Zakes Bantwini with Kasango and “Umuzi eSandton” by Big Zulu featuring Lwah Ndlunkulu – some fans of the top ten are worried that not having Maskandi on the list will cause a huge decline in total votes.

“There is no Maskandi, the voting will not even be half of the usual numbers,” replied another twitter user on the post by Ukhozi FM.

The winner will be played on 31 December, as the Song of the Year.
