To mark the opening of nominations for the tenth South African Hip Hop Awards (SAHHA), the organisers have announced the theme of this year’s ceremony and it’s the most topical one yet.
This year’s theme has been dubbed “The Manifesto” to coincide with the 2021 local government elections.
The ceremony will also introduce two new categories: the Artist of the Decade and Best International Act, to bring the total to 24.
While the addition of two new awards would usually take the total to 25, the organisers have announced that the Promoter of the Year category had to be cancelled due to the pandemic.
“Covid has meant the cancellation of the Promoter of the Year category due to cancellation of events and Covid regulations,” read the site where they usually display the nominees for the Promoter of the Year award.
They will also honour Big Zulu with an UBUNTU Activism Award.
The event will be aired on SABC 1 on 4 December, and will be a virtual event.
Voting opened on Wednesday for the nine categories that are eligible for public votes. These include Best Collabo, Best Radio Show, Song of the Year and an award for the new Artist of the Decade. The Awards are contested by respected rappers in the industry like Blxckie with the song “Yex4” featuring Nasty C, who was also nominated for three awards.
Voting can be done via SMS or through the SAHHA’s website until 26 November.
