Dean Berta Viñales, a 15-year-old Superbike rider has died in a fatal accident in the Supersport 300 race of the World Superbike Championship in Jerez, in Spain.
After 11 laps in Saturday’s race, the Spanish teenager crashed along with three other riders.
World Superbike said in a statement: “After a serious incident during WorldSSP300 Race 1, Dean Berta Viñales has sadly succumbed to injuries. The rider suffered severe head and thoracic injuries. Medical vehicles arrived at the site immediately and the rider was attended to on track, in the ambulance and at the circuit Medical Centre.”
Despite the medical staff’s best efforts, the rider unfortunately succumbed to his injuries later the same day, and the race was cancelled.
The young driver is the cousin of the MotoGP rider Maverick Viñales. The MotoGP tweeted they’re devastated by the loss of such a talented rider.
“Sending all our love and strength to Maverick Viñales and Dean’s entire family, his team and loved ones,” the tweet said.
Six-time MotoGP winner, Marc Marquez, sent his condolences to the Viñales family, offering his love and support as they endure this difficult time.
