Two more people have been arrested for July’s deadly and widespread unrest as the police continue to crack down on suspected instigators.
Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale confirmed the arrest of the two suspects, aged 35 and 36, on Sunday morning.
One of the suspects is a 36-year-old woman known on Twitter as Sphithiphithi Evaluator @_Africansoil with a followership of over 50,000.
The twitter account is known for supporting former president Jacob Zuma.
She was arrested on Saturday in Leondale during a search and seizure operation in which the police took exhibits for further investigation.
Her identity will be revealed when she appears in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of incitement to commit public violence.
The male suspect will appear at the Pietermaritzburg High court, also on Monday.
“Members from Crime Against the State working together with Crime Intelligence arrested 35 and 36-year-old suspects for incitement to commit public violence on Saturday 28 August in Gauteng and KZN,” said Mogale.
This, she said, led to the Brookside Mall in Pietermaritzburg being set alight, shops broken into and criminal activities such as theft of goods taking place.
The search and arrest warrants were authorized and executed on Saturday.
“Investigations against those who incite, instigate or conspire with others to commit crime including public violence are continuing,” she said.
More than 350 people died during the week-long unrest that gripped KZN and Gauteng following the imprisonment of Zuma after he defied a court order telling him to appear at the state capture commission of inquiry.
