An ANC ward councillor in Daveyton, Ekurhuleni, went on a looting spree – heading in and out of the Total Sports and Markhams shops three times. But he didn’t know that the CCTV cameras had him in their sights.
The police pounced on Solly Seloane on Monday, after combing through CCTV footage three weeks after the looting that hit Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.
Seloane was allegedly among the group of people who looted Markhams and Total Sports.
He appeared in the Daveyton magistrate court on Tuesday, where he was charged with theft, possession of stolen goods and public violence.
The ANC in Ekurhuleni confirmed the arrest.
Party regional secretary Thembinkosi Nciza said all ANC members in the region linked to the looting would face the music.
“We will definitely be instituting our own processes to deal with our members who were part of the unrest in our country three weeks ago,” he told Scrolla.Africa.
“We will rely on the constitution of the ANC for members who are criminally charged.”
According to the mall management, Seloane was caught in the act entering the Markhams and Total Sports stores three times.
Cellphones, clothing and sneakers were among the items allegedly stolen.
Police spokesperson Constance Moalosi said more arrests were on the cards.
“The identification of the wanted suspects will also be revealed once preliminary investigations have been completed,” she said.
Seloane is still in police custody and will appear in court again on Friday for a formal bail application.
Meanwhile, the “Mercedes Benz Looter” has handed himself over to the police after a video of him carrying goods from Woolworths went viral on social media. His name is Mbuso Moloi from Durban.
Mbuso, who could be seen in the video stashing the goods in a Mercedes Benz, denied that he was looting.
Instead, he said he had found the goods outside the store and helped himself.
