Kidnap victim rescued
Police have rescued a 38-year-old man who was kidnapped in central Johannesburg on 30 August. His captors demanded a $2 million ransom from his family. He was freed unharmed after more than a month in captivity.
Three suspects were arrested on Sunday, 4 October. Police say they had the cellphone used to demand the ransom. Investigators then traced the man to a property in Randfontein, where he was rescued and two more suspects were arrested. All five are expected to face kidnapping and extortion charges.
The operation involved Johannesburg Central detectives, Crime Intelligence, the Anti-Kidnapping Team, the Flying Squad and private security companies.
