- A R95.98 Shoprite basket buys maize meal, two tins of beans, carrots and half a cabbage.
- The food can make about 25 pap portions, with beans and vegetables served on the side.
R100 can buy enough basic food at Shoprite to make several simple meals for a family.
Scrolla.Africa checked Shoprite’s online prices on Friday, 17 July, and found a useful basket costing R95.98.
The basket includes a 2.5kg bag of Pride maize meal for R39.99. Two 400g tins of Rhodes baked beans cost R29 on special until 22 July. A 1kg bag of carrots costs R16.99, while half a medium cabbage costs R10.
That leaves R4.02 in change.
The maize meal can be used for soft porridge in the morning or stiff pap later in the day.
At 100g of dry maize meal per person, the bag can make about 25 portions.
The baked beans can be served with pap for a quick meal.
The carrots and cabbage can be cooked together and served as a vegetable side. They can also be mixed into the beans to help the food go further.
The maize meal is the main part of the basket because it lasts longer and can be used in different ways.
The Shoprite bean special ends on 22 July. Prices and stock may also differ between stores and areas.
Shoppers should check prices before leaving home, especially when taxi fare or delivery costs are involved.
