• A 37-year-old woman from Nyanga says two men broke into her shack at night and raped her for nearly two hours while her boyfriend managed to escape.
• Police arrested two suspects after they were found near the scene, and a rape and house robbery case was opened at Gugulethu Police Station.
A 37-year-old woman from Nyanga in Cape Town says she was raped by two men who broke into her shack while she was sleeping with her boyfriend.
The woman, who lives in KTC, said the attack happened during the night after they heard criminals robbing someone nearby.
She said they heard a victim being forced to go with the criminals to the Terminus to withdraw money.
After the noise outside stopped, the couple went back to sleep.
Later they woke up when two men started trying to break into their shack.
“We were woken up by two men who were trying to remove the zinc in front of the shack to gain access,” she said.
While the suspects were removing the zinc, her boyfriend managed to remove a piece of zinc at the back of the shack so they could escape.
But one of the suspects saw them.
“I don’t know how my boyfriend managed to escape but I couldn’t see him. I was alone with the two men,” she said.
The suspects forced her back into the shack through the same opening they had made.
“I went inside with one of the suspects and once we were inside, the one that was outside kicked the door,” she said.
She said the men first took her boyfriend’s clothes and the lunch she had prepared for herself.
After that they raped her.
She said the two men took turns raping her while one stood at the door to check if anyone was coming.
She said the attack lasted for almost two hours.
The men ran away when a car arrived carrying two people.
“I was saved by that car. They left and robbed the people,” she said.
She said she then ran to her parents’ home to report what had happened.
While she was there, her boyfriend arrived with police officers.
She said the suspects were still at the house and were arrested when police arrived.
“The only thing I want is for them to pay for what they did. I am having sleepless nights, I am not coping,” she said.
Western Cape South African Police Service spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed the incident.
Twigg said a rape and house robbery case was registered at Gugulethu Police Station.
