The National Freedom Party in KwaZulu-Natal is backing King Misuzulu kaZwelithini’s campaign to drop Natal from the province’s name.

The party’s KwaZulu-Natal Secretary Zodwa Mtshali said people should support the King’s call to rename the province KwaZulu.

She spoke on Wednesday at a media briefing in La Lucia, north of Durban. The party was remembering the life and legacy of their founder, the late Zanele VZ KaMagwaza-Msibi.

“That is why as the NFP we fully support King Misuzulu kaZwelithini’s campaign for the renaming of KZN to KwaZulu and the removal of Natal,” Mtshali said.

“Who was Natal by the way? How could we stay with the name without knowing even its meaning for all these years?”

She said people need to rally behind King Misuzulu.

“We need to be proud of being African and Zulus,” she said.

KaMagwaza-Msibi died in 2021 after a battle with a stroke. She left the IFP in 2010 after a fight with the party leadership.

She had been the National Chairperson and was blocking her expulsion from the IFP in the Pietermaritzburg High Court.

The fight came from her supporters who were insulting Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi. They accused him of refusing to step down as IFP president.

Police Commissioner Bheki Cele advised Buthelezi to cancel the elective conference due to safety reasons.

KaMagwaza-Msibi founded the NFP in 2011. She was re-elected as Zululand District Mayor under the NFP that year.

In 2014, President Jacob Zuma appointed her as Deputy Minister of Science and Technology. Three months later, she suffered a severe stroke. Zuma kept her in cabinet until 2019.
