The Zulu Monarch’s Royal Chancellor has been given a public instruction: take a second wife immediately.

The command came during the wedding of Inkosi Melusi Zondi at the Mzinyathi Sportsfield, north of Durban.

Inkosi Zondi was marrying his bride, Nothile maKhumalo, in a celebration attended by hundreds of guests.

But as the couple celebrated their union, the groom’s father, Thembinkosi Zondi, dropped a bombshell.

He told his son that in the Zondi family, monogamy is not an option.

“As you get married to our son, my daughter-in-law, kindly expect another one who will be his second wife after you,” Zondi senior said.

“This is the way we do things in this family. We don’t allow a man to marry one wife because if you have one wife you are like an orphan.”

The wedding was a massive festival for the community.

It was attended by Zulu regiments, Shembe church members, traditional leaders, and the Prime Minister to the Zulu Nation.

Crowds were entertained by live performances from stars like Mthandeni Manqele.

Inkosi Zondi told journalists that he married his partner of seven years to revive his family home and prove he has grown up.

“This is a milestone for me,” he said. “I am glad that when I engage with government and traditional structures, I do so as a married man, not as a boy.”

But Zondi had more than just marriage on his mind.

He used the event to invite business people from China, Russia, and Angola to look at investing in rural areas.

He said villages under traditional leadership are often the last to receive development, and he wants to change that.
