- The party says Mchunu will remain on special leave from Cabinet but continue ANC organisational work while cooperating with two ongoing investigations.
The African National Congress (ANC) has confirmed that Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has taken special leave from his Cabinet role but will continue with some party responsibilities.
In a statement issued by national spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri, the ANC said Mchunu offered to step aside from organisational work after President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.
The commission is looking into claims that Mchunu interfered in high-profile police investigations in KwaZulu-Natal.
“The African National Congress confirms that Comrade Senzo Mchunu had indicated his willingness to step aside from organisational work following the announcement of the Commission of Inquiry by President Cyril Ramaphosa,” the statement read.
The party said Mchunu continues to cooperate fully with both the Madlanga Commission and the ANC Integrity Commission, in line with its values of accountability and discipline.
The National Executive Committee (NEC) discussed Mchunu’s matter and decided he would keep performing some organisational duties while on special leave from Cabinet.
“The ANC continues to monitor developments, and the NEC will revisit its discussion should new developments arise,” the statement added.
Bhengu-Motsiri said the decision was consistent with the ANC’s constitution and long-standing policy that members who face criminal charges must step aside until their cases are finalised.
The party described this approach as part of its commitment to “renewal and ethical leadership,” saying it reflects the ANC’s pledge to integrity, transparency and accountability.
Mchunu, a senior ANC leader and former KwaZulu-Natal premier, is among the party’s most experienced members and has pledged full cooperation with both the inquiry and internal party processes.
