Celani Sikhakhane brings you KwaZulu-Natal’s latest news.

kwaNgwanase: Chief Mabhudu Tembe of the Tembe people at kwaNgwanase under uMhlabuyalingana near the Mozambique border is in trouble with his people who are angry about money they must pay to his village leaders. They recently held a big protest where they said that if your child is getting married and receiving lobola gifts, his village leaders want R2,500. If a person wants to build a new home on family land, they must pay R1,500 and another R800 for meat and drinks for the village leaders. They are also angry that the village leaders want R190 when Chief Tembe comes to visit their area. People say this money grabbing is worse than what they went through during apartheid times.

Tongaat: The Democratic Alliance in KwaZulu-Natal is asking the province’s Housing Department and eThekwini Municipality to fix leaking sewage pipes and water problems at Flamingo Heights flats in Tongaat as a health emergency. The request comes after years of complaints from people living there about broken water pipes and sewage systems, which also include flooding in flats on the ground floor. The Democratic Alliance said despite many calls for urgent help by residents and the party at local and provincial government level, the Housing Department has failed to help properly, leaving residents living in terrible conditions that are very bad for their health.

Mtubatuba: The Mtubatuba court has sent Khulekani Mandla Ngubane, 48, to jail for 15 years for murder he committed in December 2024 in the Qakwini area. Ngubane, a traditional healer, was told by his wife that she was sexually attacked by the dead man, Thandazani Babo Mngomezulu, 29, at a local shop. Ngubane then drove to Mngomezulu’s family home and forced him into his car, taking him to his house. There, he tied Mngomezulu’s hands and feet with rope and hung him upside down from a tree. Ngubane then beat him many times with a whip all over his head and body until he died.
