- Police arrested a 49-year-old suspect for a double murder in Kraaifontein, while linking him to other killings through witness identity parades.
- Three foreign nationals were also arrested after police found the murder weapon and ammunition hidden inside a local shop.
Kraaifontein residents are living in fear after a bloody night on Tuesday. In just two hours, six people were killed and one was injured in three separate shootings.
National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola visited the area on Wednesday.
“Within a few hours since the killing of six people which include four women and two men, SAPS has registered a break-through with the arrest of the suspect. The suspect was here in Kraaifontein,” said Masemola.
Police said the firearm believed to have been used was found hidden inside a foreign-owned shop.
“Three foreign nationals have also been arrested, one being a shop owner for being in possession of this illegal firearm as well as ammo. The firearm has been taken in for ballistic testing,” said Masemola.
He confirmed the 49-year-old suspect has so far only been charged in connection with the double murder of two women.
“In terms of linking him to the other scenes, police are still conducting identity parades with witnesses,” said Masemola.
But some residents are not convinced the arrests will stop the bloodshed.
“They have been visiting areas for too long without any solution, people get killed everyday and instead of things getting better they are getting worse. We cannot get excited because they visited when we don’t see the results,” said one resident, who asked not to be named.
The resident said only the army could restore peace in their community.
“Foreign nationals are making things worse, it is clear that they are working with the gangsters, we don’t know if they were forced or did it willingly but it doesn’t matter. What matters now is that they are also involved and we don’t trust them anymore,” said the resident.
“We need soldiers, gangsters, or criminals don’t fear SAPS anymore,” the resident said.
