Six elderly South Africans have died after a Covid-19 outbreak infected 37 of 40 travellers on a Namibian bus tour.

When they left South Africa on 10 May, all the passengers had certified they were negative.

By day nine of the trip, most were sick – and then 37 of the 40 tested positive.

According to Netwerk24, four of the passengers died in Namibia’s capital city Windhoek and two later in South Africa.

One was Danie Blom, the owner of Savanna Tours, the company that arranged the trip.

Blom was airlifted to Johannesburg and died last Sunday.

Another touring company, Paarl Rock Tours, dispatched two buses to ferry 33 of the tourists back to South Africa.

It was unclear when or how the group contracted Covid.

Since the outbreak of the pandemic there have been 1,739,225 cases reported in South Africa.

In the last 24 hours, 9,320 cases have been diagnosed, with Gauteng accounting for 63% of the new infections.
